Investigation launched into the management of fish stocks in West of Scotland waters
- 07 March 2024
Environmental Standards Scotland (ESS) has today (7 March 2024) launched an investigation into the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate’s approach to the sustainable management of fisheries. The decision to launch an investigation is a result of a representation submitted to ESS highlighting concerns over potential non-compliance by the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate in fulfilling their legal duties under environmental law.
The regulatory framework for the marine environment is complex. Whilst efforts have been made to balance the competing pressures on fish stocks, questions and uncertainties have been brought to ESS’ attention regarding the long-term sustainability of fish stocks going forward – specifically in respect of bycatch provisions and discarding activities. As a result, ESS has decided to launch an investigation.
ESS will provide regular updates during the investigation and will publish the outcome of the investigation in full at its conclusion. More information about the investigation can be found here.
